Gini, In order to transform our food landscape, we need to work with communities to find solutions — that's why I'm so excited about our ongoing efforts in the Mississippi Delta. This summer, Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA) partnered with Mileston Cooperative Association in Coahoma County, Mississippi. Together we distributed boxes of fresh produce to families that face barriers to accessing affordable, healthy, and sustainable food. |
In total, 350 families accessed over 255,000 servings of local, Delta-grown produce over the 12 weeks of the program. A majority of participants reported being satisfied or very satisfied with the program, with 97% saying it helped them stretch their food budget and 88% saying there are more vegetables they enjoy eating as a result. |
As one participant put it, "This program was a blessing to my community. My family and I are so grateful for you all. The produce was fresh and needed." 39.6% of Coahoma County residents live under the Federal Poverty line — more than double the national trend. And because many large retailers have closed their stores, too many families have been left without access to affordable, healthy produce. We're working with stakeholders throughout the region to make produce more affordable, accessible, and visible. Together we will ensure that everyone has access to good food — no matter where they live. |
