Your March PHA Update

This month from PHA

Hi Gini,

March is National Nutrition Month and for the PHA team that means it's time to shine a light on the third pillar of Food Equity: awareness, knowledge and skills.

We hope you'll check out the March recipe of the month: Southern Greens, a simple recipe the whole family will love.

Keep an eye out all month long for nutrition-related content including more recipes, tips, an interactive quiz, and more! Read more below for the latest updates in the Food Equity movement — including an important update about SNAP benefits.

Thank you for supporting good food for all,

The Partnership for a Healthier America Team

SNAP Benefits Reduction

As PHA works with partners across every sector to improve Food Equity — from the charitable food system to local, state, and Federal government — it's important to protect critical programs like SNAP that help millions of families access nutritious good food every day. That's why we were so disappointed to see the reduction to benefits starting March 1, that cut monthly food benefits as much as 40% for many working families and seniors on fixed incomes that rely on the program.

We cannot accomplish our Food Equity mission without critical programs like SNAP, and neither can many of our partners that we're working with in communities that lack access to good food. You can learn more about these cuts, and the impact they'll have on families in our most recent blog post.

Healthy School Meals in the News

PHA's honorary chair, former First Lady Michelle Obama, was recently featured in the news for her impact on healthier school meals. Mrs. Obama championed the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, which increased the quantity of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains required in school meals.

At PHA, we believe everyone deserves access to good food, and school lunches are just one way to ensure kids are getting the food they need to lead healthy lives. If you haven't already, we hope you'll sign our Food Equity pledge to join the thousands of people standing together in support of a better food future.

News about PHA's Healthy Hunger Relief Index

The Healthy Hunger Relief Index was created in 2021 to help our food bank partners make lasting health-focused organizational change. The tool includes an internal survey and a personalized progress report to help food banks get closer toward achieving Food Equity. Last year, 17 food bank partners participated in the survey.

We'll be sharing the aggregated data from the 2022 Healthy Hunger Relief Index later this month — so stay tuned!
