Your January PHA Update

This month from PHA

Gini,

Our team is so grateful for your support of our work. It's making all the difference for families around the country. We can't wait to build on the momentum in the year to come. We hope you'll take a minute to read through the latest updates in the Food Equity movement:

  • The January recipe of the month is Turnip Pancakes. This take on the classic scallion pancake is both fun and nutritious.
  • We were recently featured in the news for our Healthy Hunger Relief Index — a tool that supports our food bank partners by helping them measure the nutritional content of the food they serve.
  • We're launching the exciting second phase of our Good Food for All program in Indianapolis. Read the story below for more on our progress so far and what's to come.

Thank you for being a part of our community,

Recipe of the Month: Turnip Pancakes

Our recipe of the month is Turnip Pancakes. We hope this creative but healthy take on the classic scallion pancake recipe will inspire you as you get your year started in the kitchen.

We're providing fresh produce, including seasonal ingredients like turnips, carrots, and green onions, to families that face barriers to accessing healthy food as part of our work to fight for Food Equity.

PHA in the News

We were recently featured in Food Bank News for our work helping food banks prioritize nutritious food for their communities. Our Healthy Hunger Relief Index tool supports our food bank partners move toward a nutrition mindset by helping them measure how much their policies and procedures center on nutrition.

We're working with 60 food bank partners across 27 states — reaching more than 15 million people. Our partners have committed to evaluating the nutritional content of more than 906 million pounds of food.

Good Food for All: Creating Lasting Access to Affordable Produce

Over the last 2 years, we've connected tens of thousands of people with 22 million servings of fresh produce. Ellen from St. Louis, Missouri was one of those people who participated in Good Food for All (GFA) at her local YMCA. GFA helped Ellen meet her health goals, eased the burden of having to shop for food, and highlighted for her how to plan and prepare healthy meals.

"Between the cabbage, sweet potatoes, blueberries, blackberries, and cucumbers, the colors in the box were just magnificent," exclaimed Ellen. "The program helped me add color back to my plate!"

Working with the City of Indianapolis, Instacart, and local Safeway stores, we're currently piloting the next phase of Good Food for All so people like Ellen have longer-lasting access to affordable produce.

We're doing this by providing money for people to buy fresh produce, marketing to drive more demand for good food, and bringing business and community-based partners together to overcome barriers to food access. We'll be sharing more about this next phase as it gets started.
